Happy Mother's Day

It's all about this woman. The mother. In the the throws of doing what she does best. Loving and smiling. I have only known Jill for about a year when we started capturing images of her new baby girl, but have had quite a few sittings with her beautiful family since then. I have to say, I have NEVER seen her in a bad mood, loose her temper, or display anything but smiling patience - even in the face of challenging situations. I collect people in my head. I collect people who I admire and who have characteristics I choose to emulate. I have collected Jill. So happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there. I wish you joy, patience, and peace. But above all, I wish you the love in the moments. All the moments.

Smiles on the Bay

This beautiful family invited us out to their waterfront home to capture some warm, autumn fun. The children were invited to play for candid shots of them enjoying fishing, sand, and the family pet. Each child also got some special time with Mom and Dad for a beautiful collection to last a lifetime.

An Intimate Wedding for Three

Some weddings are on a grand scale - everything is larger than life... vast. These are memorable and extravagant and beautiful. Some weddings are intimate - everything is important, special, and beautiful. We enjoyed the special moments found at this intimate wedding including pinky promises, close family, much love, and a spirited baby daughter all in a beautiful family home with white porches, pastural views, and cathedral ceiling sunrooms.

Schooled by Preschoolers

Smithsonian Early Educational Center - With this shoot, we had a chance to utilize our creative problem solving and adaptability. We are very comfortable in so many wedding situations, or in an outdoor park, or in our home studio. But even with squeezing our studio set-up into a space often half as large, we still get schooled in adaptability by the kids. Some of them are just so flexible. They meet strangers (some-awesome-cool-strangers-if-I-do-say-so-myself), get put in a room with weird backdrop stuff they have likely never seen before, and then, in less than 3 minutes, give us their genuine little personalities to capture for always. Here are some favorites from our recent preschool shoot at SEEC in Washington, DC.

An Honest Moment

Again, I will share the image that changed me. We got the chance to capture the most beautiful 6-day-old baby girl with her family last week. Mommy looked AMAZING at not even a week out. There were adorable kisses, hugs, snuggles, and laughter. We captured all this; it was beautiful. And then there was this shot - in between shots. The new mother was not posing, was not aware of the camera, was simply and beautifully looking at her new baby daughter who until very recently had only been imagined. There was a stillness and the baby felt it, and settled into the grace of it. And Brian, ever the artist, felt it and snapped this shot. And there it is. The art of that stillness. The weight of that moment. This image reminds me to look at my daughter, now six-years-old, and just as fascinating and special to me as she was in that first week of life. To look at her. And to see her. To breath into that space of stillness and simply love my child.
